By the time I was in high school, I was the one paying our family’s bills. I wrote the checks, I balanced the accounts, I knew where every dollar was going before it went there. Not because anyone assigned it to me. Because I understood the numbers better than anybody else in the house, and somebody had to.

My mom’s move into financial services put me around people with money for the first time, and it lit something up. I wanted to understand what they understood. So when it came time for someone in our house to manage the bills, I was the one who’d already started paying attention.

Pinching pennies runs in my family. My Uncle Tony could work a coupon deal so well that he’d walk out of the store with the product and the store owing him money. That was the water I grew up swimming in. Money wasn’t just tight. Squeezing it was a skill, and we were proud of being good at it.

So when I started in business years later, I brought that same operating system with me. Every decision ran through one filter: what’s the cheapest way to do this. Cheapest materials, cheapest labor, cheapest everything. It felt like discipline. It felt like the smart move. For a while, it was.

Last Week and This Week

Last week we talked about the money story you’re living, the sentence you repeat to yourself often enough that it starts to feel like fact. I told you mine was rooted in scarcity, and that even after I started studying money and investing, that story didn’t let go easily. It stuck around for decades.

Here’s what I didn’t unpack yet. Awareness is step one. It tells you what story you’re living. It doesn’t hand you a new one. This week is about step two: choosing the identity you actually want to build from.

The Identity That Got Me This Far

I want to be clear about something. The scarcity identity wasn’t all bad. It made me sharp with numbers when I was young. It gave me a work ethic and a respect for a dollar that never left me. It’s part of why I could take over the family finances as a teenager without messing it up.

But an identity that gets you started isn’t always the one that gets you where you’re going. Mine had a ceiling. If every decision runs through “what’s the cheapest way to do this,” you end up optimizing for cost instead of value, and you miss the fact that some of the most important returns in business and in life don’t show up on a spreadsheet.

The Shift Nobody Told Me About

It took me a long time to see it, but here’s what changed everything. I started noticing that the moments my business actually grew weren’t the moments I saved the most money. They were the moments I gave more than I had to. Paying a good trade partner fairly instead of squeezing them on price. Taking care of a client in a way they didn’t expect. Showing up for someone with no immediate ask attached.

Treat somebody well, and something in them wants to return the favor. Not because they owe you. Because that’s how relationships work, in business and in life. That single realization did more for my wealth than any budget ever did. Connection and generosity compound the same way money does, and honestly, they compound faster.

That was the second identity. Not the penny-pincher who could out-coupon anybody in the room. Someone who understood that abundance, shared freely, is what actually makes things grow.

Choosing Your New Identity

You don’t get to a new identity by arguing yourself out of the old one. You get there by deciding, on purpose, who you’re becoming, and then feeding that decision with the right inputs. That’s step three in the formula we’re building together: new mentors, new books, new rooms to stand in, environments that make the identity you want feel normal instead of foreign.

So here’s the exercise. Name the identity you’ve been operating from. Not the polished version, the honest one. Then name the identity you want to build from instead. Not a personality transplant. Just a different default answer to the decisions you make every day.
