“Readers are leaders.” I have been telling my kids that their entire lives. I believe it completely. And for most of my life, I didn't live it at all.
I grew up loving sports, not books. If I had free time, there was zero chance I was picking up something to read. I was picking up a baseball, a soccer ball, or whatever ball I could find first. We had a massive collection of CliffsNotes in our house that got me through high school without ever finishing an actual book. It worked well enough that I never questioned it.
College Changed the Equation, Slightly
In a literature class in college, I finally decided I had better read the real thing instead of the summary if I wanted an A. So I did. And I realized reading was not nearly as painful as I had built it up to be in my head.
That cracked something open. In my twenties, I started reading personal growth books. My eyes had already been opened to that world a little earlier, thanks to motivation tapes I grew up hearing when my mom took a job in the training department at a financial services company. I did not know it at the time, but that was planting a seed. Throughout my twenties, I read a handful of books a year. Not a habit yet. More like an occasional visit.

The Lull, and What Came With It
Then my thirties hit, and reading all but disappeared, right alongside my physical fitness. That was the first time in my life I really felt decline instead of progress, and the two showed up together. That wasn't a coincidence then, but I understand it now.
Turning it around did not start with a grand plan. It started with tweaks. I started eating better. I started working out again, and it was hard and demoralizing at first. I was weak and out of shape and had to be honest with myself about both. But I kept showing up. And somewhere in that same stretch, I started reading again too, just a few pages a day.
In time, that small habit picked up momentum. It started compounding, the same way money does when you leave it alone and keep adding to it. I began to see the real impact reading was having on how I thought and how I made decisions. People hand you the best lessons from their entire lives in two hundred pages. I can learn in a few hours what it took somebody else fifty years to figure out. That is an absurd trade if you think about it.
For the last several years, I have been fully hooked. I read around thirty books a year now. That number sounds like a lot until you break it down. Thirty books a year is less than twenty pages a day. Reading checks two boxes at once for me. It helps you grow and get better, and as I like to say, progress equals happiness. Self-improvement is one of the spokes on the wheel of life, and it is one I ignored for a long time before I finally picked it up.
Where I’d Start
So let's get into a few books I recommend. I have dozens I could point you toward. Plenty of great modern-day books are out there, but so many are rooted in the classics, like these three. People have been writing about what makes a happy life and how money fits into that picture for over a hundred years. Money, mindset, and people. Many modern books simply repackage these same underlying storylines.
Three Classics
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Written in 1937 after Hill spent two decades studying the most successful people of his era, it has sold more than 100 million copies. The title makes it sound like it is only about money, but it is really about mindset, persistence, and defining what you actually want before you go chase it.
As Man Thinketh by James Allen. Written in 1903, barely a hundred pages, and still sold more than 10 million copies without a marketing machine behind it, just word of mouth across generations. The core idea is simple and still underrated: your circumstances are shaped far more by your thinking than most people want to admit.
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Written in 1936 and with more than 30 million copies sold, it reminds us that none of this works in isolation. You can master your mindset and your money and still miss the point if you never learn how to genuinely connect with people. Wealth without relationships is not much of a wealth at all.
None of these books are flashy. None of them promise a shortcut. That is probably why they have lasted a century.

Set a target of ten pages a day. Not an hour. Just a few pages. Trade a few minutes of scrolling for a few minutes of reading.
Keep a running note, digital or paper, of the one idea from each chapter you actually want to remember.
